Project title: RESTORATION OF AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS IN THE ŞONTEA-FORTUNA AREA- COMPONENT OF NATURA 2000 SITES ROSPA0031 AND ROSCI0065 OF THE DANUBE DELTA BIOSPHERE RESERVE [RESTORATION-DD]

Project duration: May 2015 – April 2017

Total project value: 1.556.177 Euro

Project financed through EEA Grants 2009-2014, RO 02 Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Programme, Project call no. 3 “Large Ecosystems Restoration Scheme”

Program Operator: Ministry of Environment

Project Promoter: Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development

Partner 1: NINA, Norway

Partner 2: ARBDD Tulcea

Project Director: Dr. ing. Eugenia CIOACĂ

Acronimul proiectului: RESTAURARE-DD

The project will be implemented in:

  • South-East Region, România
  • County: Tulcea
  • Location: Danube Delta, Şontea-Fortuna Complex.

GENERAL OBJECTIVE

Restoration of fragmented wetland ecosystems within the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve’s Natura 2000 sites for halting these ecosystem’s biodiversity decline

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

O1.  Improvemet of fragmented wetland ecosystems status within the Șontea-Fortuna protected areas from the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve.

O2. Public awareness on wetland ecosystems services and the importance of conserving their favourable conditions.

O3. Development of an international scientific partnership relating to restoration of protected wetland ecosystems.

Project description:

The main action proposed in this project consists in hydrotechnical restoration works, dredging of secondary canals, over a length of 13 560 m, in two protected areas of the Şontea-Fortuna natural area from the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve (DDBR).

The restoration works aim at restoring or improving the secondary canals / habitats connectivity to the main canals, migration routes of aquatic species, especially in the Danube river low water level conditions.

Restoring the habitats is a prerequisite for restoring, improving and maintaining the favorable conservation status of aquatic species of flora and fauna of European/ National interest Natura 2000 site SPA and SCI of the DDBR.

Actions to restore natural habitats and to inform the public on the importance and effect of the proposed activities in this project, aiming to halt the decline of biodiversity-  as the natural heritage of the DDBR.

Restoration works of the Șontea-Fortuna aquatic ecosystems as a component of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve ROSPA0031 and ROSCI0065 Natura 2000 sites

The execution of wetland ecosystems restoration works in the western part of the Şontea-Fortuna aquatic complex, consists in dredging of 13.560 m secondary canals. They are based on the technical documentation approved and accepted by the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Authority namely, Feasibility study and Technical project “Restoration works of the Șontea-Fortuna aquatic ecosystems as a component of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve ROSPA0031 and ROSCI0065 Natura 2000 sites” and also the building authorization issued by the Tulcea County Council.

Information and publicity on the project objectives and results

This was achieved by means of the following actions:

2 press conferences for launching and closing the project with the participation of about 50 guests / conference;
