The ecological restoration in the Danube Delta is one way of sustainable development of nature and local communities in the medium and long term. Since 1994, following Romania’s accession to the Ramsar Convention – an international convention dedicated to the protection of wetlands- in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve there have been implemented the following types of projects: projects of ecological restoration of the wetlands which have been altered anthropogenically (dammed and drained), of restoration of degraded areas, and of improvement of the circulation of water \/ connectivity.<\/p>\n
The environmental reconstruction program in the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve was implemented by the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development and the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve in collaboration with:<\/p>\n
- \n
- WWF Auen Institute, Rastatt – Germany, for Babina (2100 ha) and Cernovca (1580 ha) agricultural areas, The Furtuna Forest East-West (2115 ha) and Popina II piscicultural area (3600 ha);<\/li>\n
- The Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management, Flevoland – The Netherlands for fishing polders Popina II and Holbina I \/ II (4370 ha) and Dunav\u0103\u0163 II (1260 ha).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Improving water circulation \/ connectivity consisted of cleaning the secondary and fishery channels. During 1994 and ever since, this type of work has been completed in all aquatic complexes of the Danube Delta over a length of 494 km, out of 1837 km.<\/p>\n
By implementing the technical solutions \/ the optimal measures to restore ecological functions, these projects meet the fundamental objectives for improving and \/ or maintaining the favorable conservation status of the habitats of community significance which host wildlife of community and national importance, as stipulated in GEO 57\/2007 for which the Danube Delta was declared both a SPA site, and a SCI site, namely: Natura 2000: ROSPA0031 Danube Delta and The Razim-Sinoe complex, ROSPA0076 The Black Sea, ROSCI0065 The Danube Delta, \u00a0ROSCI0066 The Danube Delta- the Maritime area.<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n
In the department, another category of projects implemented is the recovery and restocking of species. The recovery and restocking of species occurs for species such as the sturgeon and the perch.<\/p>\n
The RERS Department, through the Sturgeon Research Group (GCS), represents the institute as the CITES Scientific Authority for Acipenseriformes<\/em>, actively participating in the development of norms and measures for the protection and conservation of sturgeons.<\/p>\n
In this way, GCS coordinated and participated in the development of the Substantiation Note for the Joint Order of MADR and MMAP 85\/662\/2021 regarding measures to restore and conserve sturgeon populations in natural habitats.<\/p>\n
Members of the department are also part of the Scientific Advisory Council for Sturgeons, which assists the Ministry of Environment in developing and implementing actions to improve the status of wild sturgeon populations.<\/p>\n
