Background<\/h3>\n

Both in the European Union and worldwide, drained organic soils contribute substantially to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. In the long term, a complete halt to the drainage of peatlands is required to achieve zero emissions by 2050. On the other hand, buildings are responsible for approximately 40% of energy consumption and 36% of CO2<\/sub> emissions in the EU. Deep retrofit of buildings: envelope, energy system, grid integration, renewables, and monitoring can save more than 50% of the energy demand.<\/p>\n

By the end of the project, authorities in the target area will have received decision-making support tools related to land use and energy efficiency plans; relevant professionals will have significantly increased their competence in shaping the built environment according to nearly zero energy buildings criteria and civil society and stakeholders will have increased their role in the sustainable development process.<\/p>\n

On October 27, 2021, at 10.00, the Stakeholders’ Meeting – Debate Forum took place (online) between the authorities, academia and the private sector on the environmental objectives of the project, the promotion of sustainable activities in the Danube floodplain and the Danube Delta, especially organic farming. During the event, a Stakeholder Convention for decarbonisation in the target region was presented, followed by the creation of a Sustainable Development Cluster. Symposium Output<\/h4>\n

The Stakeholder Convention<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The International Symposium of May 2021 initiated a Stakeholder Convention<\/strong> for decarbonisation in the target region by promoting sustainable activities, on the basis of which a Sustainable Development Cluster<\/strong> will be created.<\/p>\n

The beneficiaries of the Convention results will be the local authorities, the private sector and the entire population of the Lower Danube Floodplain and the Danube Delta, which will have the best practices for managing organic soils, becoming more resilient and preventing the occurrence and spread of extreme events.<\/p>\n
